Clemens Responds To Assist With A Leak A Year Ago

Gwen initially contacted us over a year ago due to her back porch leaking. We met with her and inspected the issue and her entire roof.

After Gwen received a quote for both her porch repairs and a roof replacement, she chose to have the porch repaired and would plan for the roof replacement at a later date.

So, we solved Gwen’s problem with her porch’s leaking roof. After we made repairs, it would no longer be an issue.

But Gwen’s roof wasn’t in the best shape, and other issues would start rearing their ugly heads later.

Solving Siding Issues With Communication

Working with a company once is a chance to build trust for some homeowners. Then, after establishing trust, they may move on to larger projects. And with Gwen, a year after we repaired her porch’s leaking roof, she contacted us again to replace her roof.

Gwen’s home is over 100 years old and still has much of the original construction. This means some really old materials that can be challenging to work with.

At Clemens, ensuring that your warranty will be valid is a priority. So, during her roof replacement, we needed to replace every piece of flashing, and to do that, we had to get under the siding.

And siding that old wasn’t likely to be very cooperative.

The siding was absolutely going to crack, so we communicated with Gwen. We let her know what was happening and how we could solve the problem.

We take pictures every step of the way, and we do so for multiple reasons. One is to show homeowners, like Gwen, when something isn’t right, like her siding, and needs attention.

The first option was to cut a line along the siding, install the flashing, and put a new board on the bottom. However, after we began implementing that option, Gwen wasn’t satisfied with how it looked, so we started discussing other options.

Gwen decided to have us replace the siding on the back of the home. We then proceeded to complete the flashing installation and the new siding installation.

This also allowed our roofing crew the flexibility to install the flashing correctly without tip-toeing around siding that wasn’t holding up to the work being done.

Our Meticulous Exterior Home Remodeling Workmanship

We were extremely careful when installing the flashing. Although we would replace the siding on the back of Gwen’s home, we wanted to preserve as much of the original siding as possible everywhere else.

We matched everything with a newer comparable material that would perform much better. And Gwen was happy with the way it looked.

In addition, we exposed some insulation issues that Gwen was unaware of, which led to us improving her home’s insulation.

We even installed a vapor barrier made of weaved plastic that prevents moisture from penetrating it. This prevents moisture from building up. It sends it back toward the flashing, which then kicks it back onto the roof and into the gutters.

This water barrier is crucial, and we installed it with pinpoint precision.

There are roofers out there who wouldn’t have bothered with the siding on Gwen’s home at all. They would either leave the existing flashing and not worry about it or damage the siding and hope the homeowner doesn’t notice – and then fill holes with caulking, or worse.
